History of Hats

Hats have been around for centuries. First as brimless caps, they later developed brims and bills. These original hats can be seen on Roman pottery from 400B.C. Eventually hat making became an industry, especially in places like Milan. The term ‘Milliner’ comes from Milan, a city in Italy. These milliners would not only block and shape the hats, but they would also dress them by adding lace, ribbons, and flowers to match a woman’s outfit. For years it was actually considered a faux-pas to be seen without a hat, whether you were male or female, rich or poor. Into the 20th century the hat was an accessory that could be changed depending on your activity.
Hats are a way to finish an outfit, keep warm or cool (depending on the climate), and get noticed!
