Glossary

Following is a glossary of frequently used terms when describing our hats. If you should have a question, that is not answered by this glossary, please feel free to call us toll free at 1-877-7744-0081 or send us an E-mail.

 

 

Band - a strip of some type of fabric, usually leather or cotton, that decorated the hat and is placed where the crown and the brim of the hat meet
Bao - a type of light-weight straw
Beret - a soft, round cap, usually made of a wool felt, with a flat crown
Big Apple - see Newsboy cap
Boater - a flat brimmed, flat crown straw hat, often with a colored ribbon; also called a skimmer
Boonie - a type of wide brim hat, commonly used by the military, that is usually water resistant and packable
Bowler Hat - a type of hat that is usually made of a cotton canvas and has a wide, downward sloping brim
Brim - the projecting edge of the hat; you should handle your hat by the brim of the hat, especially if it is made of straw, to prevent any damage to the crown
Bucket Hat - a type of hat that is usually made of a cotton canvas and has a wide, downward sloping brim
Canvas - a closely woven fabric, usually made of cotton, that is heavy and durable
Cloche Hat - a bell shaped hat popularized in the 1920’s
Concho - a round or oval piece of silver metal, usually embellished in some way
Coolmax® - a fabric made by DuPont that wicks moisture from your skin for optimum cooling
Cowboy Hat - a high-crowned, wide brimmed hat that was popularized in the American West; most can be customized by rolling the brim and creasing the crown
Crown - the top most part of a hat
Fascinator - a small hat, usually made with feathers, flowers, and/or beads, that attaches to the hair with a clip, headband, or comb
Fedora - a fedora is a type of hat that consists of a creased and dented crown and a brim that is usually turned up in the back; can be traced back to an 1882 play by Victorien Sardou where one was worn by Sarah Bernhardt
Gambler Hat - a wide brimmed hat with a flat crown
Grosgrain Ribbon - a closely woven silk or rayon fabric with narrow horizontal ribs
Homburg - a type of hat  with a tall creased crown, but no dents; usually more formal in style and made of felt
Ivy Cap - a type of soft round cap with a flat top and a small bill in the front; often called a flat cap
Newsboy Cap - a soft brimmed hat with eight panels and a short brim; also called a Gatsby cap, Big Apple, 8-Panel
Outback Hat - a wide brimmed hat with sides that are slightly turned up and a tear-drop shaped crown with a slight pinch
Palm Fiber - a leaf fiber or hard fiber obtained from the leaves of the dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis), a member of the palm family
Panama Hat - a type of hat that is produced in Ecuador and is made from the leaves of the toquilla straw plant (Carludovica palmata)
Paper Braid - a blend of high-quality, natural paper fibers that is more versatile than conventional straw
Pith Helmet - a cloth covered helmet designed to shade the wearer from the sun and was used heavily by militaries in tropical climates; also known as a safari hat
Porkpie Hat - a type of hat that has a circular crown and brim, named for its resemblance to a pork pie
Raffia (Organic) - a type of straw that thrives in Madagascar and east Africa, that is soft and supple usually used in packable hats and is considered renewable resource and especially low impact on the environment
Rayosan® - a sun protectant fabric that blocks up to 99% of the suns harmful UV rays
Safari Hat - a hat that is usually made of straw and has a center crease and its brim typically has a downward slope at the front and back
Solarwave® - a sun protective fabric that offers the maximum UPF rating
Scrambled Eggs - is the slang term for the leaf design found on the visors of military caps worn by high ranking officers since they resemble scrambled eggs
Seagrass - a type of grass used for weaving that is found along the sea coast; they are dark green to brown in color and have a smooth texture
Silk Noil - is the short fiber left over from combing wool or spinning silk; also known as raw silk
Skimmer - a type of hat that is normally made of straw and it has a stiff flat crown and brim with a ribbon along the crown; also called a boater
Snap Brim - a type of flexible brim
Stingy Brim - a short brim, usually only 1’’ to 1 ½’’
Supplex® - a nylon fabric that is engineered to provide the soft touch of cotton with the strength and durability of nylon
Top Hat - a tall, flat crowned, cylindrical hat worn by men in the 19th & early 20th centuries
Trilby Hat - a type of hat that is very similar to the fedora but it has a very short brim that tends to have more of an upturn in the back and a deeper pinch in the crown
UPF - Ultraviolet Protection Factor; this is the measure of how much UVB and UVA rays are blocked by the fabric. A UPF 50+ fabric will block 99% of harmful rays
